How can a link tell you when a TikTok was posted?

Every TikTok video ID is a 64-bit number, and its top 32 bits are the upload time as Unix seconds. Shift the ID right by 32 bits and you have the timestamp. The date shown in the app is rounded to the day; this one is exact to the second.

Does it work on deleted or private videos?

Yes. The time is part of the ID itself, so nothing has to be fetched. A link to a video that no longer exists still decodes, which is why investigators and journalists use it to order events.

Why does a short link not work?

Links such as vm.tiktok.com/… hide the ID behind a redirect. This tool never contacts TikTok, so it cannot follow them. Open the short link and paste the full address, which contains /video/ followed by the ID.

Is anything I paste stored?

No. The decoding runs in your browser and the links never leave your device.
